The Future of Book Marketing: Why eBook Promos Aren’t Dead, They’re Not Enough

by Adanna Moriarty

Let’s be honest, the book marketing landscape has undergone significant changes.

Ten years ago, you could run a free or $0.99 eBook promo, spike your sales rank, and coast on that visibility for weeks. Today? You’re lucky if the bump lasts two days. It’s not that eBook promos don’t work anymore; it’s that the ecosystem around them has changed.

Reading Habits Have Shifted

Here’s a stat that might make your coffee sputter: only 14% of Americans set reading goals in a year. That means your book isn’t just competing with other books; it’s competing with Netflix, TikTok, podcasts, and every other distraction in the scroll.

Promos used to be the strategy. Now they’re just one part of it.

The Amazon Reality

Another truth bomb: 70% of Amazon customers never go beyond the first page of search results.

So, if you’re relying on the algorithm alone to do your marketing, you’re basically playing the lottery. That’s why running a single eBook promo and hoping it sticks is like throwing confetti into the wind. Sure, it’s pretty, but it doesn’t land anywhere that counts.

How eBook Promos Work Now

Promos still have power, but only when you stack them. Here’s what’s working right now:

• Bundle your efforts. Pair your eBook promos with Amazon ads, social media pushes, and newsletter mentions.

• Stack your timing. Instead of a single day, plan two to three promos across a week. Momentum feeds the algorithm.

• Feed the A10 algorithm. Amazon’s newer A10 places greater emphasis on off-Amazon traffic and consistent sales. So, when your social and newsletter traffic hits your promo, you get extra lift.

The key is not to run promos in isolation. Run them inside a strategy.

Make It Cyclical

Promos are your spark, not your engine.

Use them to drive readers into your system—your website, newsletter, or community. Give them a reason to stay connected:

• Fiction authors → bonus short story or alternate POV chapter

• Nonfiction authors → checklist, mini guide, or private training link

• Memoir authors → playlist, photo gallery, or extended story snippet

That’s how you turn short-term spikes into long-term relationships.

The Real Talk

None of this works if you’re treating your book like a hobby.

If you want real visibility, treat it like a business. That means giving it your time, investing some money, and setting up systems that keep working while you write your next book.

So no, eBook promos aren’t dead. They just need a little more company to stay alive.

At ProBookLaunch, that’s our entire mission: to make the tech and marketing side of publishing actually doable for authors.
