The Magic of Revision
“To write is human, to edit is divine.”—Stephen King
Former New York Editor Emily Heckman, who has worked with Stephen King, will discuss the process that really makes your draft into a manuscript.
Author of eleven books, Jerry Dunn will discuss his career as a travel writer and author and how to make your words pop off the page!
The June 3 meeting of IWOSC/WPN Ventura County will host editor Emily Heckman who will speak on the art and craft of revisions – a skill set every writers needs. Over her twenty plus years working at Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, Random House, and Grove presses, Heckman developed the tools to help a writer polish their manuscripts into finished books.
The meeting takes place Monday, June 3 at the Goebel Adult Center in Thousand Oaks and begins at 6:30 pm. Sponsoring nonprofits at the Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC) and the Small Publishers, Artists & Writers Network (WPN), a national literary organization.
About the session:
Laying down a draft of a novel or a work of nonfiction is no joke: it’s what turns a dreamer into an actual writer. But turning a draft into a first-rate manuscript is what makes a writer and an author.
The only way to get there is by whole-heartedly engaging in the process of revision—that magical, indescribable, gut-wrenchingly honest, and 100% necessary aspect of writing—preferably with a skilled editor, if possible.
Revising your work takes guts because it’s about learning to detach from your work and looking at it through an objective lens. It means learning to let go of what you think a story ought to be and instead, working to make a story what it wants to be.
In this session, long-time book editor (and writer) Emily Heckman will discuss the art of revision and how it’s the only way to improve your story and improve your skill as a writer.
The meeting is open to the public. A fee of $5 is charged for non-WPN members. People are asked to RSVP in advance so the correct number of chairs can be set. The meeting will be held on June 3, 2019, at the Goebel Senior Adult Center, 1385 E Janss Rd. Thousand Oaks, CA 91362 from 6:30 to 8 pm. Refreshments available so plan to stay and meet other area writers.
About our speaker:
Emily Heckman worked as an acquisitions editor in NYC for twenty years before launching her freelance career as an editor and writer. She’s worked with greats such as Stephen King, Mary Higgins Clark, Ann Rule, and Jeffery Deaver. Nothing gives her more pleasure than launching a new writer into the challenging, fickle world of the published author.
