Social Media for Authors
Which platforms are best, where readers visits,
and how to create a buzz.
The March 25 meeting of IWOSC/WPN Ventura County will host two publishing pros, indie publisher/author Mandy Jackson-Beverly and book marketer Kathleen Kaiser. In a special joint speaker meeting, this dynamic duo will discuss the info you need to grab a reader’s attention through social media.
You are an author or are about to publish. You’ve spent months, maybe years, writing your book, now what? Whether you are an independent author/publisher or traditionally published, you will need to have a presence on social media. But what does this really mean and what does it look like? Can I have someone else do it all for me? Are there efficient ways to balance my time on social media and still have enough time in each day to write?
At this meeting with book marketer Kathleen Kaiser and author Mandy Jackson-Beverly, they will give their take on social media from an author perspective. They’ll discuss the different social media platforms so you can decide which is the ideal fit for you and your genre because not all platforms are created equal!
Kathleen manages social media for her author clients and, as president of the Small Publishers, Artists & Writers Network, consults with both small publishers and indie authors on their creation of an audience and avid readers. She will explain why specific platforms are great for spreading the word and others for developing loyal followers.
Mandy actively engages with her worldwide audience of readers daily, interacting with them and extending her brand, and thus her books to a broader audience. She will give demonstrations of how to use Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other popular social media sites for authors.
They’ll talk about hashtags and where, when, and why do we use them. The importance of having dedicated “Author Pages” on social media. They’ll give you references to help you get started. Bring your questions and let’s get social!

Mandy Jackson-Beverly was born in Pyramid Hill, Victoria, Australia—population 419—and grew up around the rugged coastline and rolling hills of Tasmania. Upon moving to England, she discovered the tantalizing London fashion scene and fell in love with the concept of the creative collective. Later in Los Angeles, she found her own creative freedom among the thriving, no-holds-barred visionaries of the music video world.
Mandy has worked as a costume designer and stylist for an amazing array of creative dynamos including photographer Herb Ritts; directors Joel and Ethan Coen, David Fincher, and Julien Temple; and music icons David Bowie, Madonna, and Tina Turner. She taught art and theater in public high school, is a contributor to The Huffington Post, and reviews books for The New York Journal of Books. These days she lives with her family in Ojai, California, and spins stories for her readers’ pleasure as well as her own. She is the author of A Secret Muse, The Devil And The Muse, and The Legend of Astridr: Birth, and The Immortal Muse.
When Mandy’s not writing or reading (she has a fascination with Jung), she’s cooking, painting, or on walkabout—preferably in Italy. Mandy loves to hear from her readers. You can find her via her website at www.mandyjacksonbeverly.com.
