Publishing and Writing Law
Ivan Hoffman, B.A., J.D.
Come hear Ivan Hoffman, a publishing and writing attorney with over 45 years of experience, discuss key issues you need to know for your business with a pragmatic, “how to make money from your IP” approach on Wednesday, July 18. After all, writers are all in the intellectual property business and a working knowledge of this complex area of the law is essential.
Publishing and writing and your ability to make money from your business depend on rights established under federal copyright and trademark law and common law as well as laws dealing with contracts and related matters. Without a knowledge of these laws and without valid agreements, what you have is nothing but an illusion and a house of cards. It only appears you are in business but in reality, you are not since given a controversy between you and the other party (and there is almost always a controversy), the house of cards can collapse and you risk losing your rights and the money that goes along with those rights.
Mr. Hoffman will cover topics such as:
- The publisher/author agreement (including royalties, joint author issues, warranties and representations and many other provisions), agreements with illustrators (perhaps among the most important agreements you will enter into), agreements with editors, issues related to “work made for hire” agreements including the very important provisions under California law dealing with these agreements, fair use, foreign rights and other topics.
- Trademark law
- Online legal issues
- How to “work backwards”
There will be time for questions throughout the seminar so bring your questions along.
