Trends That Were the Talk at Romance Writers Conference

by Penny Sanserveiri
So it’s been said that we are all romantics at heart, and it’s never more true than when you go to a romance writers conference. I was just at Romance Writers of America (RWA) conference and had such fun! But I also learned some great tips about some hot new trends, not just in romance, but across all genres. Here are just a few to start with (I’ll blog on the rest):

  • Readers love a series: if you’ve written fiction, consider making it into a series or writing a series based on additional characters in the book.
  • Short is the new long: I’ve written on this a few times, but it’s never more apparent than in fiction. Shorter books, novellas ranging from 27,000 to 35,000 words, are huge right now.
  • Pick a lane: this came from several of the speakers and what it means is don’t jump genres just because you think one isn’t selling. Pick a lane and stick with it; you’ll get there faster.
  • Libraries are the new, and often uncharted, territory for many authors: consider getting into libraries, as many have opened their doors to quality self-published books.
