As many of you might have heard, Amazon just announced the Kindle Vella system. A quick recap of this:
- New system that sells novellas called episodes
- Episodes are between 600-5,000 words long.
- Will be available to readers in the “next few months.”
- Authors will receive 50% of royalties.
- Readers spend ‘tokens’ to unlock the stories.
- Only available to those in the U.S. at the moment
As you can see, this could be an excellent way to diversify income streams and find new readers for your works.
Furthermore, as it is with most new markets, those that get in at the beginning usually stand the most to gain, if and when the new platform takes off. Remember (or know of) the first group to publish on KDP when it came out?
So, how does one publish a Vella? Or better yet, what are some of the marketing tactics that authors should think about with these? To answer this I asked Jason Hamilton, who has been publishing on Vella, to create the most epic guide on navigating Kindle Vella:
In this article, you will learn:
- What Kindle Vella is
- How it works
- Its potential benefits to authors
- The Step-By-Step process to publish using Kindle Vella
- Additional tips and strategies to use
In the end, it might not take off. However, knowing Amazon and that this is a direct move to cut off competitors (discussed in the article), it wouldn’t surprise me if they really work it to be successful.
So see whether or not this fits in your author platform-building and is something that fits you and your style.
